Men and Women

"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27

I don’t watch much TV, but some time ago I was captivated by the promotions for ABC’s Prime-time Live, so I tuned in. The show was entitled “Men and Women and the Sex Difference,” and the focus was the differences between the sexes and the reasons for those differences.

John Stossel, the host of the show, did a masterful job of reporting his findings and of interviewing a wide variety of experts in the field. The conclusion of the program, supported by scientific research on the brain, numerous sociological studies, and personal experiences of countless parents was that boys and girls are different. They are different, not just in obvious physical characteristics but in the way they relate to other human beings and the way they view life. For example, women are the nurturers and the responders. Men are the aggressors and the initiators.

The traditional roles for men and women in society, then, have emerged from the differences and not the other way around. In other words, girls don’t play with dolls and boys with guns because of society’s gender expectations. They move in those directions and into society’s roles because of their basic emotional and intellectual make-up—they’re born with certain tendencies, a fact observed by almost all parents.

The host emphasized that “different” does not mean unequal or that one sex is better than the other. And certainly the fact that men and women are different shouldn’t negate equal opportunity. It does mean, however, that instead of denying these basic and important differences, we should celebrate them, helping children and young people accept their masculinity and femininity.

Almost as fascinating as the results of the studies were the reactions of extreme feminists who, for decades, have been preaching the opposite. When faced with the facts, they rejected them outright and even stated that scientists shouldn’t be doing that kind of research. In other words, these women have an agenda that they are pushing--their minds are made up—and they don’t want to be deterred or confused by the facts. Why should truth mess up their finely tuned but blatantly false messages?

Beyond radical feminism, we see this in other areas of our society, where political correctness determines public policy, rewrites history, and promotes twisted values, despite the disastrous consequences and the facts.
