"Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too." 1 John 5:1
This can never be said enough. Jesus taught us that we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. Then we are to love others as we love ourselves. This isn't an option, just some denominational doctrine we can choose or discard, this is a command from Jesus! I get so sick of people claiming they love the Lord! They walk around with their religious noses stuck so high up in the air, they can't even see the poor, the widows, or the orphans. They only love the prestige that comes from praying on the street corners so everyone can see them, or wearing their $1500.00 suits to church so everyone knows how important they are. Seems to me that Jesus knew people like this too, they were the called pharisees. He called them hypocrites!
I am not trying to judge anyone. I too am guilty of not paying attention to the needs of others. The problem is we are still caught in our flesh. That is why Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit, to teach us, to comfort us, and to assist us. If we will allow the Holy Spirit, he will teach us how to love God. He will teach us how to love people. He will teach us how to push back the darkness.
If you are finding it difficult to love your neighbor, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how. Open our heart to God, be honest, tell him you don't know how to love Him. Then allow the Holy Spirit to teach you. If you're a Christian, but not acting in love or showing love to those you come into contact with on a daily basis, then you need to repent! You will be found with no excuse, repent and ask God to help you love those hard to love people. He has placed you in their lives to be a witness of his love. How can you not?
Jesus said "they will know you are my disciples by your love one for another." The only thing I want in this life is to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. That means that no matter how jacked up you are, I have to love you...period...
On the flip side of this, no matter how jacked up I am, you have to love me too!!! :)
