"So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say?" Luke 6:46, NLT
Wow! Straight from the mouth of Jesus. When I read this, it was like a shot of instant conviction. What am I doing contrary to his instructions? Probably many more things than I would care to mention, but let's look at this a little deeper.
What was Jesus trying to get across here? He wasn't trying to condemn us, because we know according to Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation to those who love the Lord, and are called according to his purpose. So, what are some of the things he tells us to do?
Jesus replied, "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments." Mt. 22:37-40
If we could learn to do these two things, everything else would fall into place. So how do we actually apply these to our lives in practical ways? I believe we start by spending time with God. We set aside time for prayer, reading the Bible, loving on him and allowing him to love on us. The closer we get to him, the closer he will get to us.
What are some of the examples of loving our neighbor? Praying for our enemies, caring for the poor, feeding orphans, accepting people where they're at, visiting them that are in prison or are sick. Jesus said that if someone asks you to walk with them one mile, go with them two. Sometimes in order to truly help, we have to go the extra mile.
"And they will know you're my disciples by your love one for another."
So, what was he trying to get across to us? Exactly what he said, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord! When you don't do what I say? He wasn't talking about do's & don'ts, He was talking about Loving God - Loving People - Pushing Back Darkness!
