"To learn you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction." Prov. 12:1 NLT
It took me many long hard years to understand this. Most of my life I've been a rebellious, hard headed individual, who didn't think I needed to listen to anyone. I would make my own decisions and to heck with anyone who didn't like it!
Three trips to prison later, I finally got it. Not only did I have a problem with authority figures, I was the least disciplined person in the world! I still struggle with self-discipline, but at least now I recognize it. That in itself proves God's grace & mercy to me.
The Bible teaches that as a Father who loves his son discipline's him, so God disciplines his children who he loves. That is why it is stupid to hate correction. When we are being disciplined by God, that is how we grow. Just like when your kid runs out in the road, if you discipline him for it he knows not to do it again. If you didn't love him, you would just let him continue to run crazy and eventually some unobservant driver would hit him.
I used to think that if I let someone tell me what to do, or if I actually did what I was told, it would prove me weak. I have found that to be one of the biggest lies I've lived. Not only is there strength in surrender, at least in surrender to the Lord, but there is hope, comfort, and community to be under solid leadership.
Jesus said in order to be an effective leader, you must have the heart of a servant. Rebelliousness, is a product of pride. Being humble is a product of surrender. I've never met a true server who was puffed up with pride.
My prayer for today is.., Lord teach me your ways. Discipline me in the areas where I need it. Make me usable so that I can love you, love people, and push back the darkness.
