We've been unpacking the "Lord's Prayer," over the last few days. It was something I wanted to do each day until we finished it, but things don't always go according to the way I want to do things. Today however, I really feel like this next part is something we need to hit on.
"Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11
Our daily bread consists of everything we need to sustain us for this day. That includes our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. Many times we pray about the desires of our heart, which is a good thing. God says he delights in giving us the desires of our heart, but here I believe Jesus was speaking plainly and meant exactly what he said. Pray for our daily bread.
In America, this almost seems silly to us. We are so rich that for most of us food, water and provisions, are automatic. However there are millions around the world who still struggle for the basics every day. If your "daily bread" is automatic, then the needs you might look at could be in the other categories.
Jesus said that he was the "bread of life." How is your walk with him. Maybe in your prayer life you should be asking for more of him to sustain your daily walk. Maybe your "daily bread" is in your relationships. Could you need daily help in working out a difficult situation with someone you are close to? This could also fall under forgiveness, which we will hit on next time. But for many of us, it could be that daily we need to be reminded of just how special someone really is to us.
In Proverbs chapter 30, verses 7 thru 9, Agur wrote; O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die. First, help me never tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, "Who is the Lord?" And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God's holy name.
If only we could see the wisdom in this. Nothing we can gain in this world will last, only what we store in Heaven. Don't be afraid to ask God for your daily bread, it is his will to provide it, but realize which things you need to sustain you, and pray earnestly for these things.
