If you're anything like me, it's easy to become distracted this time of the year. It seems like there is no end to the things that have to get done. If we're not careful, stress will begin to build up, possibly leading to problems that could easily be avoided.
Like many people, my favorite old testament prophet is Isaiah. He was given such a clear picture of God’s grace and compassion for the lost. Within the pages of the book of Isaiah, there lies mountains of wisdom. One of my biggest character flaws is that I tend to get distracted. Ooh, so shiny…, therefore it’s easy for me to get caught up in my own little world. I can usually tell when this is happening, because I start withdrawing, isolating myself, then I notice I’m becoming depressed and I even start slipping where my prayer life is concerned. One day last summer, while in the midst of a crisis of my own creation, I stopped and said enough! I got off by myself and began to seek God. This was what He gave me;
“Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.” Isaiah 58:10
What a powerful yet simple tool we have at our disposal, compassion. We are given opportunities to minister to people everyday, and what better way to spread the gospel than wrapped up in a gift of compassion. I’ve found that when I get my eyes off me and focus on the things going on around me, my problems suddenly don’t seem so big. By simply helping those we come into contact with, God is not only using us to bless them, I believe He is actually setting the givers up for blessings pressed down and shaken together. You givers out there might need to build bigger barns or better yet just find more people to minister to in the upcoming year.
I’ve begun rambling, so I will wrap this up with the frontline church logo: LOVE GOD – LOVE PEOPLE – PUSH BACK DARKNESS More than a slogan, words to live by! Everyday I keep these words in front of me, and everyday I'm glad they are there! During this Christmas season, let's all try to make this cute little catch phrase our personal motto. Ask the Holy Spirit each day to help us do these three things.
I've been a bit busy and a little distracted lately, so if I don't get the chance to write again before the 25th, do know I'm praying all of you will have a very Merry Christmas!
