Marked by God

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

When asked how do I know I'm saved, I find my answer where I find all of my answers, in God's holy word. For the Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit. He sent us his Holy Spirit, to guide us into all truth, to comfort us in times of trials and tribulations and to correct us when we get off course. Here is the good part, God established us with Christ. Knowing the evil that lurks in our hearts he still chose to redeem us. Nothing can separate us from him, however by the power of the Holy Spirit he also put his seal or his mark on us. We are in the world but no longer of the world. Our lives should look different now. You've been called out of that pit, step into the light and start living your life for the one who bought you with such a great price.

Paul mentions two gifts God gives when we become believers: (1) a seal of ownership to show who our Master is, and (2) the Holy Spirit, who guarantees that we belong to him and will receive all his benefits. The Holy Spirit guarantees that salvation is ours now, and that we will receive so much more when Christ returns. The great comfort and power the Holy Spirit gives in this life is a foretaste or down payment ("first installment") of the benefits of our eternal life in God's presence. With the privilege of belonging to God comes the responsibility of identifying ourselves as his faithful servants. Don't be ashamed to let others know that you are his.
