"Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God's right hand." Colossians 3:1, NLT
I've heard it said, "don't become so heavenly minded that you're no earthly good." There is a lot of truth in that statement, but in several instances we're reminded to "keep our eye on the prize."
What is it that we're hoping for? The resurrection with Jesus. To live with Him, for eternity! Paul said, "that if our hope in the resurrection were a lie, then we are to be pitied above all people." Praise God we know that his word is true! That Jesus has conquered death and the grave, and that all our hope is in Him.
Why is it that we are encouraged to keep our eye on the prize, or in this case the realities of heaven? "Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!" Mt. 6:22 NLT So, it goes to reason that if our eye is a lamp, by keeping our eye on the reality of heaven, where Jesus sits at the right hand of God, then our whole body will be filled with light!
In Matthew 6:22, Jesus actually used this verse while warning about serving money rather than serving God, so I took it out of context, but I believe it fit's here pretty well. That's the best part about God's word, it's alive. Amazing how something written thousands of years ago can be so relevant in our daily lives.
