For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh, (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds), casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 Cor. 10:3-5
As a Christian, the last thing we want to do is sin against the Lord. However, it seems the harder we try to live according to His Word, the more relentless the enemy attacks us. It doesn't matter if we've been saved for 50 years, or if we came to the Lord 5 minutes ago, the struggle remains. The good news is that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God. He gives us all the tools we need to overcome these attacks through the the power of the Holy Spirit.
What amazes me, is how easily we allow the enemy to set up strongholds in our lives. It's almost like we invite him in and offer him our spare guest room, them give him food, drink and any refreshments he might enjoy. I'm sure you are saying, "I have never invited Satan into my house!! You must be an idiot to think I would ever do anything that foolish!"
Okay, check this out. All sin committed begins exactly the same way, with a thought. Before I can do anything, either good or bad, I must think about it first. So, the enemy comes at us with a thought of lust for instance. At this point we can do one of two things; first we can do what Paul teaches in the above scripture and cast down those imaginations that are exalting themselves against the knowledge of God and win the victory over it. Second, we can take the easy route and allow this simple thought to grow into sin. By dwelling on these thoughts, we lower our defenses and allow the temptation to lead us straight into sin which leads us to destruction.
David fell into adultery and murder, because he was consumed by his lust for Bethsheba. If when he had first started having thoughts about Bethsheba and cast them down, it would have changed his whole life.
How do we do this? Remember, our weapons are not carnal but mighty through God. We must pray continually. We must put on the whole armor of God. Ephesians 6:10-20.
